Sympathy for Mr. Volpé?

by Richard Fournier, Président, section locale 29 du SCEP
April 1, 2012
Reading Time: 3min read

As President of the CEP Local 29 located in Edmundston, I simply had to send in my two cents and represent the views of myself and my members.

I am quite perplexed to see Mr. Jeannot Volpé coming out of the woodwork and crying out injustice because his pension got cut by one third.  Now Mr. Volpé, you know a little bit how it feels to be taken advantage of by government laws.  In your case, we don’t have much sympathy because you do have a good pension as a past member of government.  Let me explain our case and maybe, maybe you will have sympathy for us and join us in our fight to regain our hard-earned money.

We worked at the former Fraser paper mill now known as Twin Rivers.  The mill never stopped functioning, the owners remained the same, they changed the name of the company and voilà – we lost  35.4% for those who are 55 years old or more and 54% for those who are below 55 years old. This is the main difference between you and us Mr. Volpé; in our case, we invested our hard-earned money in our pension fund.  Each pay check, we contributed more than our share, for over a period of 30 years and more. This does not apply to you because your pension was funded by tax payer`s money. You would think that governments, whether provincial or federal, would stand up for workers and for our deferred wages.  They certainly didn’t for us and I doubt they will for you.

While you were parliament member you should have insured the pension funds whether they be from public or private sector. For many years you were a conservative party member and an MLA. You defended their values, policies and you`re getting screwed out of one third of your pension fund by your own party. Same thing happened to us with the company. Man that hurts doesn`t it.
