Fredericton – Gallery Connexion is pleased to announce the opening reception of Nathalie Daoust’s Tokyo Hotel Story on Thursday, January 12th at 7pm.
Nathalie Daoust’s Tokyo Hotel Story is a series of photographs exploring female sexuality and the subversion of gender stereotypes. After spending several months in Alpha, one of the biggest S&M “love hotels” in Japan, Daoust photographed 39 women of all ages in their private rooms, surrounded by the specialist equipment and dressed in the regalia that helps define their trade of Dominatrix. The exhibition will feature some photographs in 3D.
Daoust’s goal is to provide an insight into the concept of women as dominant beings. She believes numerous challenges still exist in terms of confronting deep-rooted stereotypes of gender-roles, not only in Japan, but the world as well.
Daoust will give an artist talk at Gallery Connexion on January 14th at 2pm. Salon Connex, an open forum critical discussion about the work, will be held February 26th at the Charlotte Street Art Centre. The exhibition runs until March 2nd.
Gallery Connexion is Fredericton’s only artist-run-centre. Located at 440 York St in the Chestnut Complex, Gallery Connexion’s mandate is to present controversial and thought provoking contemporary artwork to the Fredericton community. Gallery Connexion is open Tuesday to Friday noon until 6 and Saturday noon until 4. Admission is free.
