Libyans and their supporters rallied in Fredericton over the noon hour today, Saturday, February 26 in front of Fredericton City Hall. Rallies in solidarity with the people of Libya are happening across Canada today in at least nine cities from Halifax to Vancouver, including a rally on Parliament Hill. Almost 100 people gathered in
Fredericton to stand in solidarity with the people of Libya and hear speeches from Libyans living in Fredericton. The death toll from Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s assault on the people of Libya is not known. On Thursday, February 24, François Zimeray, France’s Ambassador for Human Rights, said that the death toll could be as high as 2,000. Despite international condemnation, Gaddafi is refusing to step down.
Saturday’s rally was the second rally in support of Libya this week in Fredericton. On Tuesday, February 22, Libyan people and their supporters gathered over the lunch hour and chanted for the long-time ruler of their country to get out of their country and be brought to justice. They called for an end to the killing of youth on the streets of Tripoli and Benghasi.
